As a regular reader of Guardian Money I consulted your pages before arranging car hire for a recent family holiday in Rome. We shopped around and chose Maggiore, a firm with a good reputation according to online reviews. Instead of signing up for its expensive excess insurance cover, we bought a policy with WorldWideInsure. Driving in Italy is always challenging, and my husband smashed a wing mirror against a tree. We filed an insurance claim when we got home, but WorldWideInsure is refusing to pay out on our claim until we can provide a copy of the final repairs invoice. We have sent repeated emails to Maggiore and ClaimEz the claims handling company used by WorldWideInsure and have also tried to contact them directly, but so far they have not replied.
They then refuse to refund it and say you signed for it even if you declined it at the rental desk. Do take care as they are only trying to earn extra revenue for their company and possibly personal commission on the sale.
Thankfully, we did not have to claim. The whole transaction was done online and at the end, we were sent all the details of the coverage and terms and conditions, by email. These we read, printed out and took with us. In addition, we forwarded all the email correspondence from our home email to a yahoo account, which we could access if there was any problem.
Ditto, with flight details. The car - hire -in- Ireland has been worrying me mainly due to some of the very negative experiences on the forum.

Not necessary in others. We've had it twice, skipped it twice, never need to file a claim. It all depends on how risk averse you are.
